American Variety With Carolyn & Alison The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays, Saturdays. Continues through Sept. 8 2012

Drinking & Writing Theater's tribute to classic variety shows is performed in a bar and best viewed through beer goggles. In my admittedly sober state, the humor felt contrived. While video interludes about vengeful tap-dancing orphans and advertisements for the Koozie Comeback Club (plugging beer koozies imprinted with social tips) show potential, they haven't been given the chance to fully develop. And hosts Carolyn Shoemaker and Alison Connelly fail to redeem the 50-minute show despite their impressive stage presence and knack for physical comedy. Drinking & Writing's motto is "exploring the connection between creativity and alcohol"; though I agree that booze-fueled writing can bear comedic fruit, this show could've used more postbinge attention and TLC. —Marissa Oberlander
