Thanks for the story on the Chicago Tribune's series on the nondeleterious effects of the Patriot Act [Hot Type, December 5]. I live in Vegas, and the story of the FBI using the Patriot Act to go after our county commissioners et al is being widely ripped--even in conservative Vegas--as the most horrendous use, to date, of the Patriot Act's powers.
I'm embarrassed for the Tribune, where several of my friends have worked over the years. The writer's characterization of people who argue against the Patriot Act as "civil libertarians" shows just how far from reality he is: I always thought people who believed in constitutionality were about as American as God, apple pie and, well, formerly, the Chicago Tribune.
