Amira & Sam

87 minutes 2014

A recently discharged army sergeant (Martin Starr), pounding the pavement in New York City, reconnects with the man who served as his translator in Iraq and soon becomes romantically involved with the man's niece, who's living illegally in the States. This indie drama is unconvincing as a love story and heavy-handed in its message of tolerance, and a subplot about a corrupt hedge fund run by the sergeant's cousin feels totally misguided. Starr's subtle, charismatic performance keeps this watchable, however; he often manages to suggest what a better filmmaker might have made of the premise. Sean Mullin directed his own script.
