Amy

Rated R 128 minutes 2015

Director Asif Kapadia and editor Chris King modeled this portrait of British singer Amy Winehouse on their previous documentary, Senna (2010), using only preexisting footage and telling their story as though it were unfolding in the present. The results are less illuminating this time around, in part because Winehouse's sad demise—she lost herself in drugs and bad relationships before dying of alcohol poisoning in 2011—recalls that of so many other doomed young stars. Winehouse's struggles with bulimia and depression are introduced like plot twists midway through the film, which feels a bit sensationalistic, but Kapadia and King provide some worthy insights about the damaging effects of celebrity on psychologically fragile individuals. And the music is fantastic.
