An Accidental Organist Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Sundays. Continues through Nov. 7 2010

My heart sank when the nun puppet appeared onstage to deliver a cutesy no-cell-phones announcement at the top of David Boyle's one-man show. After decades of Nunsenses and Late Nite Catechisms, the Ain't-the-Sisters-Fun genre of Catholic humor has long since lost its appeal for me. But The Accidental Organist turns out to be something else--if not entirely then very nearly so. A professional church musician who says he's played at hundreds of weddings and thousands of funerals, as well as three morning masses every Sunday of his career, Boyle has put together a kind of comic confessional based on his experiences. His fey, catty persona can veer toward the vicious when, for example, he gets on the subject of fat brides. But the piece as a whole is a well-wrought mix of cussedness, wit, close observation, and earned emotion--with some surprisingly enjoyable hymns thrown in. --Tony Adler
