An American Romance

121 minutes 2013

King Vidor's epic 1944 study of the rise of an immigrant family set against the background of the steel industry was the victim of studio politics: MGM promised Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman but gave him Brian Donlevy and Ann Richards—and extensive recutting. But even as the drama disintegrates, Vidor's skill in presenting the rhythms of collective action (here, the work of the mills and factories) raises the documentary sections of the film to the level of his best work.
