An Evening With Li'l Miss Chatterbox The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays. Continues through Sept. 25 2009

Burlesque is uneasily wedded to a faux talk show in this Pub Theater offering. Rebecca Quirke's nasty-nice host brings out a bevy of stripteasing beauties and then proceeds either to fawn over them or tear them apart ("So, you couldn't cut it as a real dancer") for utterly arbitrary reasons. The women who performed on opening night combined luscious physicality with the nudge-nudge self-awareness of neoburlesque--as in Naughty Natanya's spoken-word homage to Gypsy Rose Lee, featuring a shout-out to Lady Windermere’s Fan. But the comic tensions between the middle-aged-and-desperate Miss Chatterbox and her nubile guests aren't teased out enough to give this show the edge it needs. --Kerry Reid
