Theodor Adorno's oft-quoted--and misunderstood--dictum that "to write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric" tends to obscure the fact that many people wrote poetry at places like Auschwitz, and some of them were no more than children. Set at the "model" concentration camp of Terezin and based on children's writings discovered there after World War II, Michael Slade's haunting, emotionally rich Holocaust drama focuses on eight kids who find solace in one another and in art--poetry, music, puppetry, and drama--as their circumstances become ever grimmer. Both Tom Arvetis and his cast largely avoid melodramatic traps, and Slade’s script pointedly avoids suggesting that the survival of the art in any way compensates for the genocidal murder of the artists. --Kerry Reid
