And Neither Have I Wings to Fly The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 9 2010

There isn't nearly enough dysfunction in this well-made play about dissimilar sisters dealing with the death of their mother in 1950s Ireland: Ann Noble's 1995 script hits neither comic heights nor dramatic depths. In this Shapeshifters Theatre production, director Robert Ayres pays attention to the details, but his workmanlike efforts with a lackluster cast seldom catch fire. The exception: when Julia Beck and Mike Cherry are onstage as elder sister Eveline and her love interest. Though too young for the role, Beck captures Eveline's stoop-shouldered repression, resignation, and swift detours into rage, while Cherry gives a kinetic, convincing performance as the goodhearted black sheep who wants her. --Laura Molzahn
