Andre Gregory: Before and After Dinner

Some 30 years after Louis Malle's My Dinner With Andre (1981), actor and theater director Andre Gregory holds forth again in this documentary portrait by his wife, Cindy Kleine. The best scenes here show the retired thespian rehearsing a workshop production of Ibsen's The Master Builder with his friend, frequent collaborator, and Dinner costar Wallace Shawn. But Kleine casts a fairly wide net, revisiting Gregory's celebrated avant-garde productions in the 70s and his character work in Hollywood movies (The Last Temptation of Christ, Demolition Man); other sequences show him sharing stories over meals and trying to unravel the mystery of whether his father was a Nazi collaborator. Kleine is nearly a quarter century younger than her husband, something she dwells upon in cheery voice-over narration; this may be the movie's least interesting aspect, but it's a nice corollary to the Ibsen play, which deals with a respected architect and the young woman he desires.
