Local singer-songwriter Angel Olsen has gotten a good bit of national and even international exposure touring and recording as a member of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's backing band, but every time I've heard her voice ring out in one of his songs, it's left me yearning for more of her solo material. Thankfully she's got a new full-length on the way, Half Way Home (Bathetic), which adds a bit of classic country to her usual sparse, serene, and melancholy folk—including a touch of guitar twang and the occasional walking bass line with wide-open spaces between the notes. The real showstopper continues to be Olsen's singing, which ranges from a beautiful, quivering near-whisper to an almost overpowering wail—her otherworldly performance brings plenty of emotional heft to the rumination on death in "Lonely Universe." —Leor Galil
