A young friend, a true music enthusiast he, called me from Los Angeles the other day and announced, “The new Animal Collective is the album of the year. Or any year!” He then bestowed a more dubious honor, declaring, “I think they are the new Radiohead. Or just like how, when OK Computer came out, it totally gave everyone new ideas about how to make really out-there music accessible.” Lastly he added: “And I don’t think it was just because I was stoned when I listened to it.” I imagine that if I got high, well, ever, Merriweather Post Pavilion (Domino) would melt my brain like a crayon in the sun. It’s a tweaked-out colossus, a thousand points of sound—squeaking, honk-bonking, whooshing—that all seem to be floating deep, deep in an ethereal ocean of reverb stirred by snaky stereo panning. With their past few albums AC have gone from being the Beatles and/or Stones for the new generation of art-school dropout bands to being the Dead for nonhippies—the forever-jam of the new neon frontier is their undisputed territory. —Jessica Hopper
