Animales Nocturnos Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through April 15 2018

Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga wrote this cryptic one-act 15 years ago, but its themes of immigration and urban isolation remain relevant, and they attracted Aguijón Theater managing director Marcela Muñoz. A stoic and cruel man preys on his downstairs neighbor and his wife after a new law encourages citizens to report individuals they suspect to be undocumented. Presented in alternating Spanish and English with accompanying supertitles, Muñoz's production keeps its audience on its toes and its characters at a distance—literally—behind emblematic metal bars. Stilted and downplayed performances make it a mostly intellectual exercise rather than a visceral experience, but the questions it raises are undoubtedly substantive. —Dan Jakes
