Animating Life: A Tribute to Helen Hill (1970-2007)

Animator Helen Hill was murdered in her New Orleans home earlier this year, about 16 months after her films were damaged by the flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina. The ten works on this memorial program reveal an artist influenced by Lotte Reiniger's shadow-puppet films; though her works lack coherence and her kiddie-pop scores can be grating, her eclectic mix of styles (stop motion, cutouts, painting on film, live action) can be delightful. Film for Rosie uses titles to introduce a pig and her piggy friends, color-stained images adding a poetic touch. Ideal for kids, Madame Winger Makes a Film is a primer that revels in the medium's physicality.
