Anne McGuire: Videos

In Anne McGuire's videos intentionally “bad” performances evoke mental states such as loneliness and sadness and even suggest mental breakdown. In Joe DiMaggio 1, 2, 3 (1991) she's a singer, her voice almost grating, nearly out of control—think Sid Vicious's “My Way.” In a ridiculous voice-over love song to Joe she offers to fulfill any of his “sexually perverse ideas,” and the jerky camera shifts from San Francisco images to tracking a distant white-haired man as she pleads “Get in my car.” In I Am Crazy and You're Not Wrong (1997) McGuire seems to be singing onstage, but we don't see the audience we hear, suggesting that her “public” is an empty fantasy. 60 min.
