Another Country

If you can get past the wacky premise—that the British public school system is the direct cause of (a) homosexuality and (b) communism—what remains is a dull, conventionally carpentered melodrama (1984), a natural for miniseries expansion by PBS. While the screenplay (by Julian Mitchell, based on his West End production) deplores the injustices of the English class system (mainly, it seems to make rich boys unhappy), Marik Kanievska's mise-en-scene exploits the antique architecture for every last drop of empire nostalgia. Rupert Everett is the elegant young aristocrat whose frustrated passion for a fellow classmate sends him reeling into the arms of Karl Marx. With Colin Firth, Michael Jenn, and Robert Addie.
