Anton in Show Business Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 18 2014

This theater-world satire by Jane Martin (believed by many to be the pseudonym of former Actors Theatre of Louisville head Jon Jory) centers on an unlucky regional production of Chekhov's Three Sisters. The script gets in some good jabs at the expense of both philistines and arty types, but it's liable to feel like inside baseball to anybody who doesn’t already have an opinion about the efficacy of Actors' Equity. The zingers might have more bite and the characters more depth if the all-female cast of 20% Theatre Company's production (loosely directed by Melissa Albertario and Charlotte Drover) would dial back the zany a little. As it stands, only Lindsay Bartlett, as the resident cynic, manages to be funny without veering into caricature. —Zac Thompson
