Aperiodic 18+ Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sun., May 31, 8:30 p.m. 2015

John Cage’s use of chance operations in his music is well-known, but he could also be very particular about what should and should not happen in a given piece. Aperiodic, the Chicago-based new-music ensemble led by pianist and composer Nomi Epstein, has exposed the thread of indeterminacy that connects Cage to current composers, including those associated with the Wandelweiser collective. In tonight’s concert, the group will further explore the links between the random and the specified by presenting new pieces from Epstein, Ryoko Akama, Sarah Hughes, and Tisha Mukarji that use prose rather than conventional notation, granting the performers broad interpretive latitude yet assuring the presence of certain textural, temporal, and timbral essentials. —Bill Meyer
