April Fool's Day

Produced by Frank Mancuso Jr. of Friday the 13th fame, this slasher pic gropes for a new angle on the genre, yet what it comes up with seems both derivative (of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, for starters) and self-defeating (the surprise finish, which is anything but, seems designed to deprive the audience of exactly what they've come to see). Deborah Foreman (Valley Girl) is a sinister Vassar student who invites a group of college buddies to spend a weekend at her parents' isolated island estate; the director is Fred Walton, who did the far superior 1979 When a Stranger Calls. With Griffin O'Neal, Amy Steel, and Deborah Goodrich.
