Arizona, No Roosters in the Desert Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 29 2011

The plot of Kara Hartzler's drama mirrors that of a million westerns: A small, hardy band journey across an immense desert landscape, encountering rattlesnakes, hostile natives, and water shortages along the way. The difference is that Hartzler sets her story in presentday Arizona. Based on interviews conducted by University of Arizona professor Anna Ochoa O'Leary, the play follows four Mexican women trying to cross illegally into the United States. Their trek requires acts of bravery and betrayal, which Hartzler depicts with poignancy, empathy, and a touch of magic supplied by one woman's shadow puppet-assisted folk tales. Though transitions can be clunky in Tanya Saracho's staging, the cast imbue their characters with a striving, heartbreaking faith in the American dream. --Zac Thompson
