Articular Facet Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Feb. 14-15 2015

Performing as part of Rhinofest, the musical collective Articular Facet accomplish something rare and nearly unimaginable. It's not turning Nic Collins's Bracken—a "score" of randomly generated symbols, words, and numbers projected onto a black curtain—into an ever-evolving, psychologically arresting soundscape of acoustic and electronic noise. It's not extracting ineluctable pathos from Mark Hardy’s The Hound, a droning, angular piece for strings performed alongside a live reading of H.P. Lovecraft’s 1924 short story of the same name. It's not even the performers' ability to make their odd assemblage of noise makers—springboard, skatchbox, cassette recorder, various electronic things—speak as expressively as the violin, viola, cello, and trumpet in their midst. It's their knack for doing any of this without the slightest whiff of pretension. Articular Facet offer two more programs: Saturday's features the Jeff Kowalkowski Trio and a reprise of The Hound, Sunday's Zeitgeist, a group exploration. —Justin Hayford
