As We Were

Director Eddie Romero made a number of Filipino quickies for Roger Corman's New World Pictures (with titles like Black Mama, White Mama and Savage Sisters); this 1976 epic marked a turn to more respectable material. Christopher de Leon stars as a young peasant caught up in the 1898 revolution against Spain that led to a de facto colonization by American business. Romero maintains a distanced, satiric point of view in the face of the grim historical material.
