As You Like It Closing (Theater and Galleries) Free New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 25 2013

The Traveling Players might want to rethink the logistics of their hour-long outdoor gambol through Shakespeare's turn-of-the-17th-century comedy. While the actors hold forth in the shade of several small trees, most of the audience sits staring into the baking sun. Add the myriad unavoidable acoustical challenges—traffic, dogs, airplanes, children playing, unamplified actors whose voices all but vanish when they turn their heads—and you've got a particularly arduous afternoon. Still, once the cast gets past the confounding first 15 minutes, when it's hard to figure who's who and what's what, there's good fun in the cross-dressing hijinks of befuddled lovers Rosalind and Orlando, thanks largely to the silly-schoolgirl performances of Deanne McDonald as Rosalind and Jackelyn Normand as her gal pal Celia. —Justin Hayford
