The grandson of an Atlantis scholar joins an expedition to locate the remains of the legendary civilization and discovers what he hadn't dared hope—that it still exists. Visually imaginative and even persuasively spiritual, this animated adventure has some unusually complex villains and heroes, and some of the plot and dialogue transcends what's typical in movies intended for a broad or youthful audience. Instead of joking dismissively about the idea that one culture's study of another can be hard to distinguish from occupation and plunder, the characters actually discuss—and their actions acknowledge—the unresolved irony. Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise directed a screenplay by Tab Murphy; with the voices of Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, and James Garner. 95 min.
