Avenue Q Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 14 2012

With actors manipulating Muppet-style puppets to portray the inhabitants of a dumpy New York neighborhood, this 2003 Broadway hit offers a witty, sometimes raunchy grown-up takeoff on Sesame Street. Perky tunes by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marks offer ironic life lessons on the challenges of young adulthood—gay and straight relationships, racial attitudes, joblessness, even homelessness. In NightBlue Performing Arts Company's production, director David Walters and a talented cast execute the musical's technical challenges with surprising aplomb. But they push the cute quotient too far, hammering home the comedy rather than letting it speak for itself. —Albert Williams
