Baauer, Just Blaze, Zebo, Phnm Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., Feb. 8, 10 p.m. 2013

When electronic dance music finally penetrated the American mainstream, young people got a big leg up in their centuries-old struggle to find music that would alienate their parents as much as humanly possible—for every EDM producer who’s dedicated to promoting the genre as an art form that’s as deserving of respect as rock or jazz before it, a dozen more seem to be piling up obnoxious noises to see who can make the craziest heap. Take for instance Brooklyn beat maker Baauer, whose Mad Decent single “Harlem Shake” was one of the wildest tracks of 2012—a chaotic conglomeration of twitchy snare fills, seemingly random samples, and one of the more compellingly annoying synth parts in recent memory, it sounds like a car alarm with an above-average melodic sense. Recently Baauer teamed up with rap producer turned EDM weirdo Just Blaze, and last month they released “Higher,” which seems likely to end up the “Harlem Shake” of 2013. —Miles Raymer Baauer headlines; Just Blaze, Zebo, and Phnm open.
