This recently revised 1983 musical by playwright Sybille Pearson, lyricist Richard Maltby Jr., and composer David Shire focuses on three couples coping, one way or another, with pregnancy. Unwed college students Lizzie and Danny debate whether to get hitched, middle-aged empty nesters Arlene and Alan fret over whether they want to raise another family, and 30-something Pam and Nick's desperate efforts to conceive test their marriage to the limit. The material often comes off as either glib or mawkish, but Marlon Barden's staging for the Actors Theatre Company offsets the shortcomings with honest acting and excellent vocals (though sound problems sometimes obscure the lyrics). As Arlene, Katherine Condit-Ladd makes especially powerful work of "Patterns," a superb song cut from the original production but restored here. --Albert Williams
