Bang the Drum Slowly

A genuinely compelling film about athletics—and there haven't been many—based on a story by Mark Harris and directed by John Hancock. The material is trite, but Hancock's slow-motion treatment of the experience of athletic performance is adroit and graceful. An incredible performance from Michael Moriarty, as the money-wise, icy superstar pitcher, and an engaging turn from Robert De Niro, as his back-country roommate dying of Hodgkins Disease, enhance this modest, unforced look at the way men choose to punish themselves for money.
