Barefoot in the Park Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays, Sundays. Continues through Oct. 9 2011

Beats me why the folks at Chemically Imbalanced Comedy chose to revive Neil Simon's 1963 romantic comedy. Seeing it performed without a hint of ironic distance from Kennedy-era social norms can get embarrassing, like when your otherwise smart uncle starts making fag jokes. Wide-eyed Sarah Rose Graber charms at first as goofy newlywed Corie Bratter, and Eric Bays delivers a convincing weariness as her more conventional spouse, Paul. But Graber's shtick doesn't play as well when the couple's friction gets serious in act two. Still, Bays remains so grounded that the horror of a spat getting out of control--and divorce suddenly looming--becomes palpable. --Dan Weissmann
