Baseball Music: The Sweetest Sound in the World The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Sundays. Continues through March 4 2012

Sati Word's delightful solo tribute to African-American baseball legend Buck O'Neil adheres to the poetic and sentimental tropes that America's pastime tends to inspire. Having heard the crack of Babe Ruth's bat as a kid, Word's O'Neil sets off on a lifelong quest to reproduce that sweet sound, achieving renown in the Negro Leagues and breaking barriers in the majors along the way. Word's lighthearted and informative script is of the "and then" variety, hopping along from one milestone to the next without leaving much room for developing stakes or deepening character. Still, Word's jovial and neighborly manner compensates for the holes in his portrait. —Dan Jakes
