Bastille | Chicago Reader

Arch and uninvolving, this Dutch feature follows a history teacher on his quest for his lost Jewish identity; his obsessive fascination with the unsuccessful flight of Louis XVI during the French Revolution gives way to a search for his twin brother, who may or may not have escaped the Holocaust. The trick structure serves only to further alienate the audience from the inexpressive protagonist, and director Rudolph van den Berg never finds a perspective on his plight that might expand the drama beyond surliness and self-pity.
