Batterymouth | Apollo Theater, studio | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

When: Wednesdays. Continues through Feb. 25 2009

The three members of Batterymouth do a lot of things right in this long-form improv show. They perform enthusiastically, listen to one another intently, and take time to flesh out backstories and motivations. From scene to scene, they work to adopt surprising voices and mannerisms, and occasionally hit upon compelling characters--such as a gruff waiter who delivers food before customers have ordered, or a high school kid who secretly yearns to play the flute despite his dad's shame. But for all their solid skills, the players just don't reveal enough comedic chops or satirical savvy to draw big laughs or raised eyebrows. –Ryan Hubbard
