Bear Claw The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 18 2013

Twin sisters April and Francesca return to their small hometown to look after their father, a high school band teacher who's recently been caught in a sex scandal involving a student. Placed on indefinite leave, he now spends his days writing self-exculpating letters he has no intention of sending, while his daughters hook up with townies and suffer the twentysomething blues. Playwright Hayes Borkowski has a knack for conveying unspoken discontent in ordinary dialogue, but the script could use a little get-up-and-go—the characters remain stuck in neutral and the plot never picks up momentum. Zachary Baker-Salmon's staging for Area IV Theatre is similarly sluggish, though Charlotte Mae Ellison and Havalah Grace turn in layered performances as the sisters. —Zac Thompson
