Beausoleil Recommended All Ages Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: Sat., Jan. 31, 4 & 7 p.m. 2009

Veteran fiddler Michael Doucet and his long-running band of Cajun revivalists enlist a diverse assortment of guests on their new Alligator Purse (Yep Roc)—singer Natalie Merchant, trombonist Roswell Rudd, keyboardist Garth Hudson—but the album’s sound is still Beausoleil through and through. The group has made some missteps in its 34-year career—its experiments with a harder-hitting electrified roots-rock sound were pretty unsatisfying—but this is my favorite Beausoleil record in at least a decade. The mostly traditional tunes on Alligator Purse marry frisky, amiable grooves to an easy-rolling front line of fiddles, accordion, and acoustic guitar, and there’s never a moment where you aren’t completely sure these folks are from Louisiana. —Peter Margasak
