Beautiful City

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi follows up his stunning debut feature Dancing in the Dust (2003) with this melancholy drama about the aftermath of a senseless murder. Veteran actor Faramarz Qaribian plays a taciturn loner bitterly mourning his daughter's death at the hands of a disturbed boyfriend. A friend of the murderer, just released from prison, seeks out his buddy's sister, finds her pleading with the bereaved father to sign a decree that would commute the killer's execution, and joins her campaign with equal determination, seemingly driven by a need for redemption. Like the earlier film, this is dichotomous in its design, weighing individualism against responsibility to others, the hopefulness of youth against the resignation of old age. In Farsi with subtitles. 100 min.
