Before and After

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through May 7 2011

This unique, often hilarious experiment in improvisation switches between two moments in time to show us two generations of women coping with pregnancy and the changes that follow. One finds herself with a child after a surrogacy agreement goes wrong; her daughter gets pregnant while in a relationship but questions whether her boyfriend is "father material." On the night I attended, there were confusing anachronisms such as a Lady Gaga reference in the mother's youth. But the scenes drew compelling parallels between mother and daughter. Julie Chereson's and Theresa Ohanian's raw performances give the show a strong emotional core. --Marissa Oberlander
