Bellboys, Bears, and Baggage | Redmoon Theater | Theater & Performance, Summer Guide | Chicago Reader

Bellboys, Bears, and Baggage Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 8 2014

Shakespeare's monologue about the seven ages of man (the one that begins "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players") is written on the series of doors you must pass through to get into this inventive, fascinating, mysteriously satisfying indoor spectacle. The quotation is fitting, because half the fun of this show comes from watching other audience members as they (and we) explore the many richly decorated rooms built into Redmoon's huge warehouse space—and observe the myriad enigmatic scenes being played out therein by a host of identically dressed bellboys, young lovers, and people in bear costumes. Nominally inspired by The Winter's Tale—the accusation of infidelity in the first part, the romance in the second half, and the immortal stage direction "Exit, pursued by a bear"—this evening of visual, aural, and olfactory delights may frustrate theater reactionaries hoping for more conventional fare, but it should please the rest of us. —Jack Helbig
