Beowulf Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 10 2012

Picture a Judd Apatow bromance comedy in which Seth Rogen goes on retreat with his drum circle. They decide to stage an adaptation of Beowulf, because—well, what could be more drum circle-ish than the bedrock Anglo-Saxon epic about a warrior who goes around killing man-eating monsters and their monster mothers? The thing they end up performing—by firelight, as I imagine it—is highly stylized and deeply (deeply) serious, with lots of manly dancing. But since most of the members of the drum circle lack even rudimentary chops, they keep dropping lines and making messes and not knowing how to cover their mistakes. This Arcas Productions show is almost exactly like that—only there's no Seth Rogen, no drum circle, no woods, and it's not meant to be funny. —Tony Adler
