Open House Chicago

Critics' Picks

Chicago Architecture Foundation,

The Chicago Architecture Foundation's Open House Chicago weekend, set for October 19 and 20 this year, offers an inside look at some of the city's most fascinating structures, many of them usually off-limits to the public. An outgrowth of a formerly city-run program, Great Chicago Spaces and Places, it's bigger and better than ever, opening the doors of about 150 buildings in various neighborhoods for free self- or docent-guided tours. This year's list will be available in September, but among those open last year were the tower-top Loop offices of the Murphy/Jahn architectural firm; the Gold Coast's Charnley-Persky home, designed by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright; and Uptown's embattled and shuttered Agudas Achim synagogue, with its original 1922 mosaics and stained glass.
