There may have not been a more defining moment in my career as a baseball fan than watching Kirby Puckett jog around the bases and pump his fist after hitting an 11th-inning walk-off home run in game six of the 1991 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. A stocky five foot eight, Puckett was more tank than fighter jet.

When the Blackhawks moved from the Chicago Stadium to the United Center in 1994, they found the cost of breaking down and reinstalling the mighty old Barton pipe organ prohibitive (at least by the standards of "Dollar" Bill Wirtz, God rest his puck-pinching soul). So they installed a new Allen organ designed to have the same reedy sound, and to provide continuity they kept organist Frank Pellico to run it.

Whether it's a homophone (Dawn Ting), a play on a band (AliSin Chains), or an invented weapon (Rusty Razorskates), the nickname should strike fear into an opposing line of blockers as you scrum for position to let your jammer through—and it should look cool on a trading card, too.

One of my favorite things about biking in Chicago is never getting stuck in traffic—there's a certain pleasure in cruising past a lane of cars backed up a quarter mile at rush hour and hitting the light just as it turns green. Another is finding routes not open to cars, and the south end of Southport, at an industrial stretch of Cortland just east of the Chicago River's North Branch, is my favorite.

To many Chicagoans, the beaches are fine for toe dipping but no place to go for a real swim on a steamy summer afternoon. That's because the lifeguards tend to want to do their jobs, which, in the view of some authority somewhere, means no one is allowed in water much deeper than the average adult's sagging waistline.
