Best Musical Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through March 28 2012

Porchlight Music Theatre's foray into improvisation is fast-paced fun. Here's how it works—in the first half, they parody an awards show, singing nominated songs based on audience-suggested titles. After a vote by applause, the favorite song is turned into a musical in the second half. On the night I attended, "No One Can Spoil This Investigation" from the musical JonBenet (a reference to the child beauty pageant contestant murdered in 1996) won out, narrowly beating the tastelessly hilarious "I Have a Dream, But It's a Stupid One" from the musical Shortbus. In JonBenet, Erica Elam was spot-on, playing the six-year-old title character as a diva with cloying sweetness. Staring at her reflection, she shouted, "You're a fucking star, bitch!" All the cast members have impressive singing chops and comedic timing.—Marissa Oberlander
