Cubs play-by-play man Pat Hughes
by Mick Dumke on June 20, 2013 at 4:00AM
The baseball season lasts a long time. This is a wonderful thing, but even when your team is winning, there are occasional blowouts and slow stretches—and to fill the downtime, every big-league announcer has to develop a knack for creative filibustering.
Northwestern Wildcats

It probably had a lot to do with the fourth-quarter collapse against the Cornhuskers the week before. Or the giveaway in Happy Valley earlier in the season against what should have been a decimated Penn State team—or perhaps grief was held over from the consecutive crushing losses to Army, Illinois, and Michigan in 2011.
Joakim Noah
Watching Joakim Noah lumber up and down the court—fingers flared out in his peculiar overexaggerated running motion, snarl affixed just below tufts of wilded-out and sweaty curls—doesn't bring to mind elegance. More like guts.
Spades

"We play two against two," a current inmate of the Cook County Jail says. "Some dudes will gamble—they'll play for 50 cents or a dollar, so they can buy some viable food from the commissary, because the food they serve us is horrible.
William W. Powers State Recreation Area
by Mick Dumke on June 19, 2013 at 12:55PM
Sure, it wins by default, since it's the only state park within the city limits. But Wolf Lake Recreation Area, as it's also known, is an alluring spot anyway.
North Branch Trail to the Chicago Botanic Garden
by Julia Thiel on June 20, 2013 at 4:00AM
It's hard to get the timing of a fall bike trip on the North Branch Trail just right: go too early, and the leaves won't have turned color yet; too late and they'll already be on the ground. The first time I took the trail to the Botanic Garden just happened to be on a perfectly crisp November day when the yellow and orange leaves seemed to glow in the sunlight.

Mile Eight, Frontrunners/Frontwalkers
The LGBT running and walking club goes all out for marathoners, treating them not only to water and Gatorade but also to a choreographed stage show at the eight-mile mark in Lakeview. The routine changes each year—last year's theme was gay football—but a constant are the male cheerleaders, in skirts and with pom-poms, who hand out the liquids.
Broomball at Warren Park
Imagine a version of ice hockey where the players wear regular shoes instead of skates. You'll need to picture a dozen people running around on an ice rink, trying to hit a ball the size of a softball (16-inch, of course) with sticks that sort of resemble brooms without the bristles—and occasionally falling flat as their feet go out from under them.
