Uncharted Books
by Jerome Ludwig on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
Logan Square was in need of a general-interest bookstore. (There's Bucket o' Blood Books and Records, but that's pretty genre-specific.)
CakeStyle
by Heather Kenny on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
What with the crowds and the parking and the ill-lit dressing rooms, it's amazing that there are women who like to shop. For those who don't, CakeStyle is a fairy godmother that brings outfits to your doorstep instead of Prince Charming.
Monitor Formal Wear
by Tal Rosenberg on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
So you're invited to a wedding and the invitation says "black-tie only" and you don't own a tuxedo: What do you do? Well, in my case, I pray that I fit into someone else's.
Lost Eras
by Sam Worley on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
Should you be looking for something to get me for my birthday—you've got about another week of shopping left, BTW—I might suggest a porcelain cake stand at Lost Eras, the Howard Street costume and everything-else shop. It's shaped and painted to look like a classic white cake with strawberries, and it's classy as hell.
Meaghan "Moneyworth" Garvey
by Asher Klein on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
Don't buy into the granola-crunching, knit-and-purling, homely hipster rep of indie e-bazaar Etsy; for every necklace made from driftwood there's something bangin', like Meaghan Garvey's rap/R&B votive candles. On one, a very busty Nicki Minaj intones, "I don't give a F-U-C-K."
Peggy Skemp
Jewelry inspired by fungi, lungs, and tentacles sounds like it could be a hot seller in a goth store, but designer Peggy Skemp isn't trying to gross you out. Having grown up in a family of environmentalists, biologists, and doctors, she's genuinely excited by the natural sciences.
Logan Hardware
by Miles Raymer on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
In late 2009 Jim Zespy took over the American headquarters of London-based Southern Records at Fullerton and Western and launched his own Chicago Independent Distribution to pick up Southern's slack. He also turned the space into a record store specializing in vinyl, in particular oddball genre releases most shops consider an afterthought.
Dose
by Mara Shalhoup on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
You probably won't find a bargain at Dose, but that's not to say you won't find something precious. The year-old monthly market, which celebrates its birthday on June 24, brings together, for a day, some of Chicago's most interesting electronics (vintage suitcase speakers from Gentleman's Boombox), accessories (Laura Lombardi's delicately urban necklaces fashioned from recycled material), must-have pantry items (including the retail debut this Sunday of house-milled flour and fresh pasta from Nellcote—winner of Best In-House Pasta over in our Food & Drink section), alcoholic treats (spiked snow cones from Jo Snow), and other adorable eccentricities, such as vintage camp gear and dollhouses that double as adult decor.
Woolly Mammoth Antiques & Oddities
Woolly Mammoth is the place to go for that elusive gift for the proverbial someone who has everything. Your someone already has a stuffed wallaby providing atmosphere in the game room, you say?
FoundRe: Furnishings
Raun Meyn's small, high-ceilinged storefront on West Division has a number of handsomely well-worn knickknacks, including old maps, books, and photos. But as the workstation in the back indicates, Meyn's specialty is his repurposing of salvaged wood, which he collects from deconstruction sites.
The Chicago Neighborhoods
We're all pretty patriotic when it comes to our neighborhoods—their distinct character, shared history, and occasional natural enemies. It must have occurred to designer Steve Shanabruch that Chicagoans could rally around the right hyperlocal emblems, so he made logos for every neighborhood in the city—77 in all.
Tatine Candles
Is there any other home accessory that is more of a guilty pleasure than the expensive scented candle? But once you get addicted to the complex nature of high-end candle fragrances, lighting a Yankee Candle is akin to wearing drugstore perfume.
Lang Ice Company
by Mike Sula on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
The 24-hour ice-dispensing machines on the south wall of this West Lawn ice plant are perfect for those early AM occasions when you need a trunkful of 40-pound ice blocks to cool down a stiff before the sun rises. There's a bill changer too (though it won't accept Benjamins), and the coin-operated machines also spit out 22-pound blocks and seven- and 22-pound bags of regular cubes.
Kilbourn Park plant sale
This volunteer-run organic greenhouse and community garden holds workshops on everything from crop rotation to seed starting, and in the fall it holds a perennial giveaway. But its annual plant sale in the third weekend of May is its blooming glory, when the doors are thrown open and gardeners swarm over more than 150 seedling varieties.
The Feed Store
"If it walks, crawls, flies, runs, or swims" they can feed it at this 64-year-old purveyor of Japanese millet, deer blocks, monkey chow, animal Twinkies, creeping red fescue, chinchilla feed, and anything else you might need to sustain livestock; attract, repel, or poison wildlife; or start your own petting zoo. While you're picking up your monthly ration of trout chow don't forget rodents for the python, and a few dozen ducklings for your foie gras farm.
A-Abace Cleaning Services
by Andrea Bauer on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
So I have, um, a friend whose cat occasionally forgoes the litter box for more luxurious places to take care of business—like that gorgeous vintage chair or, say, the brand-new couch. My, ahem, friend's boyfriend really doesn't like cats; in fact, he can hardly tolerate the sight of them.
Theodore Shoe Repair
I recently suffered a seemingly irreparable rift with a new pair of knee-high Coach riding boots. The right one literally split on me—at O'Hare.
Chad McDade, Ace Motorcycle & Scooter Company
by Kevin Warwick on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
Owning a vintage motorcycle can be a test of one's patience and bank account. No matter how sharp and collectible it may look, once the cobwebs are brushed off and it's polished to a sparkle, the bike still has to get running.
Quiroga's Car Washes & Detail
Quiroga's on Grand is not only the best place to get an interior/exterior car wash for ten bucks, it's also the best place to go shopping for all of your fake tattoo and talking-doll needs. The waiting area is a tiny kingdom of coin-operated toy machines, rare dolls, video games, and TVs.
Allyu Spa
by Peter Margasak on June 20, 2012 at 12:00AM
"Who doesn't like a massage," says my wife, which is why Allyu has often been my go-to when stress darkens her world and she needs a break. I've only visited their plush digs when picking up a gift certificate (you can order them online, too), and while I find the vibe a tad new-agey, I'm told it all contributes to a flawlessly relaxing experience.
Jill Coyne
There's a hot rumor going around that having your fascia manipulated is excruciatingly painful, but a session with certified Rolfer Jill Coyne quickly dispels this myth. Her studio in the Fine Arts Building is a pleasant retreat where she carefully guides your body back to the structural fluidity and freedom it was meant to have.
