Joie de Vine
by Julia Thiel on June 19, 2013 at 2:45PM
Joie de Vine takes an approach to its cocktail list that I've never seen before: it doesn't have one. You tell the bartender what spirit you want and what flavors you like, and she makes you a custom drink.
Billy Sunday's "Beloveds"
by Tal Rosenberg on June 19, 2013 at 2:45PM
Plenty of words have been written about Billy Sunday's craft cocktails, tonics on tap, and extensive supply of obscure and top-shelf liquors. But early regulars at Billy Sunday were quickly and surreptitiously introduced to "off-menu" items, including house-made Zima and something known as "Guch."
R. Franklin's Original Recipe Malort
Various retail locations, letherbee.com Jeppson's Malort—originally made in Chicago, but now produced in Florida—is still more (in)famous here, but since January there's been a truly local Malort in town: R. Franklin's, created by the Violet Hour's Robby Haynes in conjunction with Brent Engel of Letherbee Distillers.
The Beer Temple
Beer Temple owner Christopher Quinn has been using rare brews to build a name for himself since he and his wife, Margaret, opened the craft-beer store at the beginning of the year—and it's working. On opening day he offered samples of Westvleteren XII and Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout (two of the rarest beers in the world) from his private stash; for the official grand opening in February he pulled out all the stops, giving out samples of more than 30 unusual and hard-to-find specimens, including Sam Adams Utopia, Bells Batch 9,000 and 10,000, Goose Island Bourbon County Bramble Rye, and Three Floyds cognac-barrel-aged Dark Lord with chiles.
Off Color Brewing
by Philip Montoro on June 19, 2013 at 2:45PM
facebook.com/OffColorBrewing After four years of scheming, former Goose Island "innovation brewer" John Laffler and former Two Brothers brewer Dave Bleitner are finally in business, juicing up obscure or borderline-extinct traditional European styles with the anything-goes creativity of American craft brewing.
