Between the Shadow and the Wall The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 13 2011

Professor Holiday Marcher hasn't slept in six months, thanks to a special pair of contact lenses he's invented. The puzzle of the lenses, and why they've driven Marcher and a mysterious pursuer to the old Harrison Hotel in the South Loop, impels Jaimie-Lee Wise's angst-ridden drama. But that puzzle also makes most of the action unintelligible and dull (what's at stake here?), and its solution arrives with all the force of a pop gun. A onetime Columbia College student, Wise lived briefly at the Harrison (now a Travelodge); his director's note, which describes the housekeeping crew's strategies for covering up the smell of dead bodies during a summer heat wave, hints at intriguing bits of Chicago history that are mostly missing from the play itself. --Keith Griffith
