Beyond Therapy Agenda Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Sept. 28 2013

Unfolding a splendidly weird setup into a galloping romp, this full-length comedic play is the rare gem that sustains its energy from beginning to end, led by an insanely funny cast that can actually act. This hyperintelligent riff on modern-day therapy and contemporary romance takes place primarily in the offices of two lunatic therapists and their gullible patients, borrowing the mistaken identities, missed cues, and impossible logic of All's Well That Ends Well but dispensing with that play's dumbness. The weepy, emotionally befuddled Eric Bays—in therapy with the quickly derailing Sabrina Pratt—plays opposite the smart, serrated edge of Erin Sprague, who's fending off the advances of her own therapist, the deeply spooky Jimmy Pennington. Gary Tiedemann, with the funniest role of the bunch, very nearly steals the show. —Marya Hornbacher
