Bible B-sides Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 25 2009

For every terrific idea in this evening of lesser-known Old Testament stories, there are two or three bad ones to gum up the works. The ingenious concept is to present stripped-down chamber theater stagings of dramatic, and often perverse, biblical tales: King David raping a soldier's wife and then arranging the soldier's death in battle, Lot's daughters getting their father drunk and screwing him to continue his bloodline. And when adapter-director Matt Miller keeps things simple, it works. Mere suggestions from his actors create all the grand passions and tumultuous conflicts any audience needs. But when he starts overliteralizing--or overstylizing--the stories, he flattens and obscures the narratives. Mac Vaughey's spotty lighting design leaves many key moments lost in darkness. --Justin Hayford
