FCC chairman Michael Powell would like us to believe he's on the side of those who view with alarm the growing concentration of ownership in commercial broadcasting. His "we are working hard to make sure that the broadcast ownership rules are not completely swept away by the hand of the court" is an obfuscation that's gone unchallenged in lecture hall (Columbia College) and press (Hot Type, the Reader, 3/21/03).

To his friends in the financial community he says, "There's too much regulation, too much government interference in telecommunications--regulators should interfere as little as possible in the operations of the market."

Powell recently called media conglomerates "our clients."

Watch out!
