Big Top JoJo and His Towering Show of Wonder New Review (Theater and Comedy) Brief Run (Theater)

When: July 11 2010

According to ringmaster JoJo (played by Jonny Stax in pink platform shoes and a pornstache), the changing roster for this circus-themed variety show can be counted on to feature two types of performers: those who make you ask, "How'd they do that?" and those who make you ask, "Why'd they do that?" On the night I attended, the acts included fire-eaters, a glasswalker, a guy who juggled glow-in-the-dark balls, and a girl who danced with a glow-in-the-dark hula hoop. Amusing in fits and starts, the show feels both thin (only six acts in 90 minutes) and bloated (frequent, self-promotional interruptions from JoJo and long, unnecessary breaks). On the bright side, there's free cotton candy. --Zac Thompson
