Through some sort of serendipity, Black Star and Neutral Milk Hotel have had weirdly synchronized career arcs. In 1998 both groups released albums that impacted their respective genres—hip-hop and indie rock—so profoundly it's hard to exaggerate, then promptly announced hiatuses that have transformed the past decade into an extended 40-days-in-the-desert situation for their rabid fans. And recently both acts have returned via a period of activity and rumor-feeding sporadic enough that it almost makes you think they're just torturing their followers for fun. Granted, Mos Def and Talib Kweli have had far more prolific solo careers than Jeff Mangum, but nothing they've done individually has matched the impeccable Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, which their large and devoted cult following has kept in heavy rotation since it came out. Back in January, DJ J Rocc played a snippet of a new song produced by Madlib on BBC Radio 1, purportedly from a forthcoming Black Star album for Stones Throw—its existence raises hopes straight through the roof that we'll hear a new effort within our lifetimes. —Miles Raymer DJ 33 opens.
